PROJECT BEAD RECOVERY is an ongoing cleanup effort undertaken by Tampa Navigators Chapter 102 along the banks of Tampa's Hillsborough River. The Gasparilla Pirate Festival has been taking place in Tampa for over one hundred years. One of the unfortunate offshoots of this tradition has been the enormous quantity of plastic beads that have been thrown into our beautiful river. These beads do not biodegrade - they simply sit on the river bottom for generations to come. The Tampa Navigators have found a fun way to combine our love for the outdoors and fishing with a concern for our environment. Fishing for beads! The beads harvested from this project will see a new life as part of a public art project soon to be announced. Stay tuned.
